MRI-Guided Prostate Biopsies

Advanced Accuracy with Fewer Risks

To overcome the limitations of traditional and fusion biopsies, we offer MRI-guided prostate biopsies—a cutting-edge, next-generation technique that eliminates the need to pass a needle through the rectum. Instead, the biopsy is performed under real-time MRI guidance while the patient is positioned inside the MRI scanner.

The MRI-Guided Biopsy Procedure

In this procedure, a small biopsy needle is passed through the skin behind the scrotum (the perineum) and directly into the prostate. This trans-perineal approach dramatically reduces the risk of infection since the needle does not pass through the bacteria-laden rectum. A recent trial found no infections at all with our MRI-guided approach, compared to 1.4% with the traditional transrectal method. Additionally, real-time MRI imaging ensures precise targeting, allowing us to reach areas that may be difficult to access with traditional biopsy techniques. This approach also benefits patients who have had rectal surgery, making biopsy possible when other methods are not feasible.

Why Choose MRI-Guided Biopsies?

With MRI-guided prostate biopsies, patients receive a safer, more precise diagnostic tool for prostate cancer detection. This technique minimizes infection risks and enhances accuracy, making it ideal for patients with hard-to-reach tumors or those who cannot undergo traditional trans-rectal biopsies. As one of the few centers in the country offering this advanced service, we are at the forefront of prostate cancer care.
